Summary	THIS IS A FOR-CREDIT COURSE OFFERED BY THE OFFICE OF LIFELONG LEARNING (OLL); ONLY STUDENTS REGISTERED WITH OLL SHOULD BE ENROLLED. The course defines the contemporary as the heir of the emancipation struggles of the 1960s and 1970s in the US where the civil rights movement, second wave feminism, and minority and immigrant rights have radically changed the American cultural landscape turning it into a de-centred pluralist configuration marked by struggles for radical democracy and equality. The course explores the varied landscape of contemporary American fiction, seeking to showcase representative works and achieve a balance across the diverse range of voices, ethnicities and cultural positions. The novels we study will be an opportunity to meet important American writers of today and recent past, study their ideas and the importance of their work to the re-definition of America.
