| Course description |
This course covers the first sections of a standard syllabus in morphology and syntax (typically Wheelock's Latin, Chapters 1-24) and is intended for those with no experience in the language at all; it is not available to those with any prior knowledge of the language. It is a fast-paced course, allowing students to cover a large amount of material in the eleven weeks of teaching; tutorials begin in the fourth week and supplement the material covered in the lectures. Lectures are interactive, with students often working in groups and taking part in translation of unadapted Latin (inscriptions) from week 1.

Other requirements | Students who have prior knowledge of the language should go into the advanced beginners' courses (1C and 1D). The Course Organiser will be responsible for assessing the students' language competence at the start of the course to ensure they are in the right course. If in doubt PTs should contact the Course Organiser in advance of registering students for the course.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- have a good understanding of the essentials of Latin grammar and syntax;
- demonstrate basic skills in translating and understanding Latin literary texts;
- demonstrate a sense of the common Latin roots of the Romance languages;
- apply these skills to deepen their understanding of the ancient world.
