Course description This course gives students the opportunity to investigate, in the light of current morphological theory, the word-formation processes of Modern English. The approach throughout will be mainly synchronic, with occasional reference to diachrony. The first half of the course will survey the major word formation processes of English (as well as some of the minor ones), combining this survey with a thorough discussion of key concepts such as 'morpheme', 'word', productivity' etc. The second half will focus on current morphological theory, and in particular on the architecture of the grammar: how do we model productivity differentials in a formal grammar? Is there a separate morphological module? How does the morphology interact with the syntax and with the phonology?

The course textbook is Ingo Plag, Word Formation in English (CUP 2003). Reference to further reading will be given in class.
