SummaryThe course will give students an understanding of key and representative problems and debates in Islamic thought through the study of a selection of primary and secondary texts. It will also give an insight into academic scholarship and debates about these topics.

Pre-requisitesVisiting students should have at least 3 courses in a suitable subject area at grade B or above (or be predicted to obtain this). We will only consider University/College level courses.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. explain key concepts and terms in various fields of Islamic learning (e.g. hadith, Qur'anic exegesis, Islamic law, theology, Sufism);
  2. read and understand central texts in different fields of Islamic learning in their original language and translate them into English;
  3. explain the significance of selected texts for the development of the respective fields of Islamic thought and place them in their historical context;
  4. evaluate and critically assess secondary literature on the above topics.
