SummaryThis is the second of three 20 credit courses in the first year. The course builds on teaching in the Foundations of Family Medicine by introducing the evidence-based approach and discussing how this is integrated into person-centred clinical practice. There is an introduction to quality improvement in clinical practice thus preparing students for their final year research project.
Course description This course aims to develop practitioners who critically integrate a person-centred approach with the available evidence and principles of family medicine to continuously improve quality of care.

Group rapid response review create a rapid response to a BMJ/BJGP (or similar) article (pre-identified) in groups of 4/5 (10%)

Critical appraisal of a peer-reviewed article (30%)

Applying principles of evidence-based medicine to clinical scenarios (60%)
Feedback Students will be given formative feedback throughout the course on the discussion boards. Feedback on summative assessments will be topic-specific but also cover generic skills, such as academic writing, critical thinking, which will be useful for future courses.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of person-centred care and evidence-based medicine as applicable to clinical practice and quality improvement
