Summary | This course aims to develop independence in the skills of project design and management, develop oral and written reporting skills, to encourage high quality technical presentation and non-technical written summaries. Project work is student¿s main chance to work on their own topic of interest, to show initiative, programming or experimental skills, and to work with placement partner. Project topic and description should be initiated by the student and could develop their work in the placement year, or could be on any topic, as agreed by the CO and identified supervisor. |
Course description |
This course provides a project choice for students doing a placement year and could be a project that is co-developed with their placement employer with the output a report that suggests action rather than a scientific report which describes a research project. Or students can, with agreement from the CO and supervisor, carry out any research project which they are expected to initiate. In this case marking criteria will be that from the integrated masters programme though with the expectation that the project work is 400 hours and student will not have done project design & literature analysis, nor Scientific computing skills. For both marks of 70% or above should be a report that could be used by placement partner or, in the case of a research project, be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- The student will be able to undertake an independent project in a Geoscience topic, producing excellent work with actionable recommendations
- The student will demonstrate a critical understanding of the theories associated with their chosen topic which will be informed by recent developments
- The student will understand scientific methodology, the use of statistics, the analytical tools employed, concepts of accuracy and precision
- The student will apply a range of standard and specialised techniques to achieve their objectives
- The student will be able to write a report on their work which is clearly written, accurate, evidence based and provides recommendations for action understandable by a non-specialist or a draft paper suitable for submission to the peer-reviewed literature.
