| Summary | The course is designed as an introduction to the Global Health and Infectious Disease programme and will place relevant content in the context of learning themes which students will be able to apply to their studies throughout the programme. |
| Course description |
This is a ten week course, delivered within the virtual learning environment of Learn. The course content provides an introduction to the subject area, enabling students to become familiar with the primary sources of information relating to global health.
As the course develops, we will discuss the main problems relating to global health and how these can be defined and develop an appreciation of the influence of infectious diseases within a wider global health perspective.
These formative activities will include:
1. Referencing and the avoidance of plagiarism
2. Engaging with colleagues (participation on course discussion for a will be assessed)
3. Academic writing
4. Reading the academic literature
5. Internet resources
6. Facilitating a global community of learners
Best practice for these exercises will be derived from existing programmes, Institute of Academic Development and the Higher Education Academy.
In addition to the content provided for the students, there will be an emphasis on student generated materials so that students can draw on and engage with data and resources pertaining to their geographical setting (and promoting awareness of cultural and diversity issues relating to this).

Written assignment constituting 60% of the course mark.
Online assignment constituting 40% of the course mark. |
| Feedback |
Summative assessment consists of a written element, worth 60% of the total mark, and an online element worth 40%. In both cases, comprehensive written feedback is provided individually with 15 working days of the assessment deadline. Students are expected to reflect on their feedback, to seek additional clarification if appropriate, and to use this to improve on future assignments of a similar nature.
Formative assessment consists of discussion around what is expected of each piece of assessed work for the course. This is conducted in an open discussion forum for all students to contribute to and provides an opportunity to clearly understand the key requirements for each assignment before submission.
Further as this is the first course upon the Global Health and Infectious Diseases programme, details formative feedback is provided on all assessed aspects. With information provided in a timely manner to inform summative components. One to one meetings with the Course Team are encourage to support this new community of online learners.
Any student can post questions about the assignment and a response will be posted on the discussion board by the course tutor within 3 working days. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Discuss and critically understand the concept of health and the global challenges that we face.
- Critically evaluate public health data from a range of resources, reflecting on the reliability and accuracy of this information.
- Communicate with peers, on a wide range of health related issues, becoming part of a global community of learners.
- Use a range of standard and specialise skills and techniques to obtain and evaluate discipline specific materials, to critically review and consolidate knowledge pertaining to global health.

Online discussion with tutors and peers will develop confidence in communicating with others and the skills to engage in high level academic discourse.
