| Summary | This has been designed as a generic module which takes a psychological approach to development from early childhood to adolescence. It offers an opportunity to extend and update understanding of development acquired in initial professional education/training. It may also be taken by those whose previous studies have not included development issues. |
| Course description |
This course takes a psychological perspective to understand development from infancy to adolescence, focusing on physical, cognitive, social and emotional development, and factors which influence development. The focus of this course is on typical development, but at times reference is made to atypical development and discussed within the context of typical development. The main areas of child and adolescent development covered include: Research methods in developmental psychology, hereditary and environmental influences on development, the development of physical and motor skills, brain development, the development of intelligence, language and literacy skills, personality, emotional development, behaviour and sex and gender identity as influences on development. Throughout the course there will be a focus on both classic research and recent research findings.
