SummaryResearch forms the foundation of creative practice, underpinning applied projects and establishing personal approaches. Students will undertake an extended body of playful, explorative and investigative research, exploring a wide range of research methodologies, whilst establishing personal directions. Students will critically reflect on findings and explore ways to organise, curate and communicate research into an extended research narrative.
The course is closely aligned to Design & Screen Cultures 4 (Extended), Illustration 4A: Studio and Illustration 4C: Exposition and will be delivered through a series of workshops, seminars and tutorials.
Course description In this course students will use playful and inventive approaches to build on existing fundamental research methodologies such as drawing, process exploration and contextual referencing.
As they plan and undertake extended projects, students will carefully map out activities which drive forward projects, establishing personal approaches both relating to and beyond the field of illustration. Projects may be research-led and open, allowing discoveries to dictate outcomes. Other research may be specific and directed, informing applied work.
As the course progresses students will critically reflect on findings, drawing connections, evaluating sources and refining their research plan in response to materials examined. As students explore the different ways research can impact their creative practice, they will also develop confidence in their own creative voice.
Finally, students will consider personal and appropriate ways to collate and curate research which describes the research journey and how it feeds an applied practice.

Additional Information (Assessment) 100% Portfolio At the end of the course students will presented a collated and curated body of research materials along with a 400-word supporting statement. Three Learning Outcomes will be equally weighting
Feedback Formative assessment will take place at the end of semester 1:

Students will present a collated body of research materials based on a personal study plan and 300-word reflective supporting statement.

Formative feedback will be given in the form of grades and written feedback.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. INVESTIGATE: plan and develop a varied and sustained range of methods which investigate personal research themes
  2. NOTATE: critically analyse research materials, mapping connections and applying materials to broader Illustration practice
