| Summary | This course provides a critical overview of theories and research on individual differences and differential psychology. The course is composed of five x 2.5-hour lectures introducing students to a range of theories of individual differences that have direct application to understanding mental health issues and illness. |
| Course description |
Students will acquire a critical and comprehensive understanding concerning the development, assessment, and implications of individual differences in psychology and mental health such as intelligence and intellectual disabilities, socio-cognitive and behavioural health, personality, and psychopathology. The course will consist of lectures and supportive materials emphasizing key theoretical perspectives and best practices in assessment.
The course will cover the following topics:
Personality: This section of the course will focus on presenting information on how personality is assessed, trait theory, personality stability and change
Personality Disorders: This section will focus on presenting different personality disorders
Intelligence: This section will focus on assessing Intelligence and theoretical models of intelligence, stability and change over the lifespan, and its relationship with developmental disorders
Intelligence and personality: Influences on health. This section will focus on the relationship that personality traits and intelligence each have with mental and physical health.
Environmental and genetic influences on mental health. This section will focus on the methods used to study environmental and genetic factors influencing behaviour, and findings for several mental illnesses and subjective wellbeing.
The course is only available to students on the MSc Psychology of Mental Health (Conversion) programme

50% - Recorded self-reflection oral presentation using as assessment tool and reporting the findings (10 minutes max in duration and will be presented in the form of a case study).
50% - Theoretical piece that will focus on the strength and limitations of the assessment tools used in the self-reflection presentation (up to 1,000 words).
2000 word essay (100%), completed as coursework. |

Formative assessment will consist of a collecting and interpreting data from a standardised psychological assessment in groups.
Summative feedback will be given on the coursework assignments. |
