SummaryThe course consists of laboratory exercises in advanced physical chemistry. When taken in combination with Chemical Physics 3S1 (CHPH09007) and Chemical Physics 3S2 (CHPH09006), this course forms part of the prescribed third year curriculum for students on degrees in Chemical Physics. The laboratory course is taken alongside students registered on the Chemistry course Chemistry 3P Practical and Transferable Skills (CHEM09007).
Course description The course provides training in advanced physical chemistry laboratory techniques. Students will normally undertake 3-4 standard experiments, and one investigation.

The experiments are guided by demonstrators and are designed both to illustrate applications of theory covered in the Chemical Physics 3S1 and 3S2 lecture courses, and to introduce typical instrumentation. The investigation provides an introduction to research methods: a group of 3-4 students are given a theme or problem and some apparatus; they must devise, build and execute experiments using less guidance than for the standard experiments. Data analysis and structured report writing are key components of the course.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Chemistry 2 (CHEM08019) AND Mathematics for Physics 1 (PHYS08035) AND Mathematics for Physics 2 (PHYS08036)
Co-requisites
Prohibited Combinations Students MUST NOT also be taking Chemistry 3P Practical and Transferable Skills (CHEM09007)
Other requirements Direct entrants with Mathematics qualifications recognised as being equivalent to a pass in the Year 1 Mathematics for Physics courses are exempted from the formal passes in Year 1 Mathematics for Physics courses.

Additional Information (Assessment) The course is assessed entirely on the basis of coursework.
Feedback For standard experiments and the investigation, demonstrators are available in the laboratory to give guidance and feedback on planning, technique, safety, data analysis and report writing. You will write a short report for each experiment, which will be assessed and returned in time for the next practical session. You will have the chance to discuss comments on your report with the demonstrators. It is expected that you will use the feedback to improve your practical performance throughout the course.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Understand the connection between practical techniques and lecture material presented in Chemical Physics 3S1 and 3S2.
  2. Work in a physical chemistry laboratory in a safe and responsible manner, both individually and as part of a team.
  3. Use electronic methods for the collection, processing, analysis and presentation of experimental data.
  4. Assess and quantify uncertainties in physical measurements.
  5. Present and discuss experimental results in the form of a clear, concise scientific report.

Additional Class Delivery Information For standard experiments: one 3-hour practical session is scheduled for execution of experimental work, and two subsequent 3-hour sessions are available for analysis and writing-up. For the investigation, four practical sessions are scheduled. Before coming to the laboratory for the practical sessions, you should prepare for your assigned experiments by reading the laboratory manual and other recommended sources.
