Summary | This course will provide practical training in key aspects of chemistry and chemical laboratory skills. The course forms a part of the curriculum for any student enrolled on the PGT MSc degree course in Analytical Chemistry, Medicinal and Biological Chemistry and Materials Chemistry. |
Course description |
The course consists of 14 laboratory practical experiments (each experiment comprises of: 1 hour prelab research, 4 hour laboratory work, 3 hours write-up). Each practical experiment has been chosen to teach and reinforce basic laboratory techniques and best practice. Best practice in experimental write-up will be discussed and key concepts of data analysis and interpretation will be introduced.
The course contains two parts - Part 1 (S1, W1-6) and Part 2 (S1, W7-10) as outlined below.
PART 1. Principles and Techniques in Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis (S1 W1-6; 8 Labs x 4h).
PART 2. Course-specific Experiments (6 Labs x 4h). In S1 W7-10, students will perform 6 lab experiments tailored to their individual PGTM course.
In addition, laboratory techniques videos will be made available for the students and workshops on literature searching and scientific writing will be provided. Finally, students will work in groups to produce a scientific poster based on one of the practical experiments in Part 1 of the course. The posters will be assessed in a mid-semester Group poster presentation workshop.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Foundational Practical Skills in a modern chemical laboratory including hands on experience obtaining measurements using a range of modern analytical techniques.
- Sample preparation, data collection, and data interpretation of X-ray powder diffraction patterns, single crystal diffraction patterns, Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), UV-vis spectroscopy, NMR spectra, HPLC, GC, and Mass Spectrometry.
