Credit level (Normal year taken)SCQF Level 11 (Postgraduate) AvailabilityNot available to visiting students
SCQF Credits10 ECTS Credits5
SummaryMaterials Chemistry involves three components of chemistry : synthesis of materials, characterisation, and exploration of potential properties of that material. A skilled materials chemist knows how to experiment in each of these three areas and integrate findings across the three areas. This course aims to develop analytical characterisation techniques vital in the study of materials chemistry. The foundations of a range of different materials characterisation techniques will be delivered in this course.
Course description This course aims to provide the basics in sample preparation, data collection and data analysis for a range of commonly used analytical techniques in Materials Chemistry. The course will be delivered through lectures, workshops and practical laboratories. The topics covered will be:

Powder X-ray Diffraction
Infrared Spectroscopy and Raman Spectroscopy for the analysis of materials
Thermal Analysis
Application of Electron Microscopy techniques for material characterisation
Electrical measurements for materials
Magnetic measurements for materials
