SummaryThis course, together with Chemistry/Chemical Physics Year Abroad Level 10 (alongside which it must always be taken), constitutes 12 months full-time study at an approved university outside Europe. The two courses are optional Year 4 curricula for students on the MChem degree programmes Chemistry with a year Abroad, Chemistry with Environmental and Sustainable Chemistry and a year Abroad, Medicinal and Biological Chemistry with a year Abroad, Chemistry with Materials Chemistry with a year Abroad and Chemical Physics with a year Abroad. During the period students undertake an extended research project on a topic agreed with their host supervisor. Taught courses may also be attended and may be chosen from those available at the university at an appropriate level and relevance to students' interests and degree programme. Such courses do not contribute towards the student's overall mark. Coursework for completion during the year is provided by the University of Edinburgh. Assessment consists of marks for coursework, a literature survey related to the project, a written project report and aspects of performance in the project.
Course description The two courses constitute the standard Year 4 curriculum for students on the following degree programmes: Chemistry with Industrial Experience, Medicinal and Biological Chemistry with Industrial Experience, Chemistry with Environmental Chemistry and Industrial Experience, and Chemical Physics with Industrial Experience. Students are selected by interview on a competitive basis and are required to submit applications according to their interests and preferred geographical location. Assessment consists of marks awarded for a written report of the project, a literature review and aspects of the performance on the placement.
