Summary | This course will cover some selected methods for analysis of biomolecules. The aim is to contextualise and build upon on theoretical concepts introduced in the first semester, illustrating these with examples of their application to analysis of biomolecules, as well as to introduce other useful techniques. The content will cover three broad themes; structural analysis, biomolecular interactions, and functional analysis. These will be used as a basis for developing students¿ abilities to describe and appropriately apply particular techniques from a suite of methodologies available to researchers. These will include spectroscopies (NMR, circular dichroism, vibrational), microscopy (including electron microscopy), fluorescence and UV/visible methods, mass spectrometry and proteomics, calorimetry and surface plasmon resonance, chromatographic and electrophoretic methods, and kinetic characterization and assay development. |

Lecture-based introduction to techniques used to analyse Biomolecules, divided into three main topics:
- Structural analysis of proteins and nucleic acids
- Interactions between biomolecules
- Analysing the function of enzymes and other proteins

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Apply their knowledge of the fundamentals of various analytical methods to the study of biomolecules.
- Identify which techniques are most appropriate to use to analyse the structure and function of biomolecules, and their interactions.
- In workshops and small-group work, collaborate with peers in self-learning exercises and share findings and informed judgements on the analysis of biomolecules with the rest of the class.
