SummaryThis course aims to provide training in the methods and skills required for students to successfully undertake their final year research project. Students will complete a small-group project introducing them to key skills and techniques required for a broad a range of chemical research fields. The course forms part of the Honours curriculum for students on the MChem degree programmes in Chemistry and Medicinal and Biological Chemistry.
Course description The course consists of structured group research exercises, which introduce the students to: reviewing scientific literature, planning a research project, risk/safety assessment, implementing experiments (practical and computational), data analysis/interpretation and communication. The exercises are carried out in small groups, and development of group-working skills is an important aim of the course. Students are assessed on their performance during the exercises and on their ability to communicate their findings in appropriate formats, such as written reports, posters and oral presentations.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Chemistry 3A (CHEM09005) AND Chemistry 3B (CHEM09006) AND Chemistry 3P Practical and Transferable Skills (CHEM09007)

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Survey the scientific literature in a given field, and successfully summarise recent research progress in written form.
  2. Plan a research project, assessing safety and resource requirements.
  3. Apply a range of research-skills to implement a programme of original research, working as a member of a team.
  4. Critically analyse and interpret the results of original research.
  5. Present, at a professional level, the results of research in an appropriate format and defend conclusions drawn.
