SummaryThis course is required to be undertaken by any repeating/resitting student. It provides general support and advice on personal and professional development, including the opportunity for students to consider their own weaknesses and strengths.
This course can be studied by distance learning. Students are given the option but must declare before week 1 if they are studying on campus or distance learning. The mode of study cannot then be changed without discussion with the Course Director.
Course description The aim of the course is to provide general support and advice on personal and professional development, including the opportunity for students to consider their own weaknesses and strengths. The course is provided both as an on campus and as a distance course (for those students not resident in the UK or away from Edinburgh). The distance option can be chosen for both or only one semester.

The distance option must be discussed with the course organiser and selected prior to the course commencing. Each student must complete a form prior to the start of the course to indicate their mode of study.

NB The distance option may be available to campus based students for one - off occasions for those students unable to attend the campus session e.g. due to EMS placement, etc. This must be discussed with the course organiser at least a week prior to the class.

Student cohort

All students who are repeating a year or part year with no special circumstances award in the previous academic year i.e. normally those that are required to attend all classes are required to take this course and must pass in order to progress (in addition to passing their re-sitting course(s)). Students with special circumstances award in previous academic year i.e. normally those on exam only can optionally take this course . For these students a pass in this course will not be required to progress but they must pass outstanding courses from previous years.

Feedback Feedback is defined as information to students which can enable them to review what they know, understand and can do in their studies, and to identify areas for improvement. Opportunities for feedback arise within timetabled classes (tutorials, practicals, lectures) as well as more informally. Feedback can be provided not only on coursework assignments, tests and exam answers, but also on activities that are not
formally assessed such as class discussion, group exercises, problem - solving and developing project plans and proposals. Below is some further detail regarding the feedback in the Professional Development course.

Student Self Reflection
Students should use the information provided, reflect and grasp opportunities throughout the course to put this to good use. This should include thinking about what progress has been made, what has gone well as well as not so well. Detailed individual feedback will be provided for each student following the submission of the second self - reflection.

Student questionnaires
Questionnaires are issued to students at the end of the course so that constructive comments can be made on the good and bad points of the course and on suggestions for change.

Assessed In-Course work
No formal feedback will be returned on the self-reflections however members of the study skills team and your Personal Tutor can talk through the content with you.

One-to-one
Students with any specific Professional Development queries should contact the relevant person as recommended in the course handbook. All other queries may be handled by the VTO office, your PT or they can point you in the right direction.
