SummaryThis course is divided into two main themes: Professional skills and clinical skills.
Professional skills:
This module will cover the topics:
Introduction to communication skills and the human animal bond
Introduction to personal and professional development including personal wellbeing and stress management and use of university library resources.
The course is taught through practical work supported by keynote lectures.

Clinical skills:
The module will introduce students to basic clinical skills and the concept of assessing a clinical case using the SOAP (subjective, objective, assessment, plan) approach. GEP classes will focus mainly on developing observation, palpation and auscultation skills relevant to canine, equine and bovine veterinary medicine.
Course description This course develops the theme of personal and interpersonal skills and communication skills, with an emphasis on inter-personal skills, client perspectives, the human-animal bond and clinical examination of the dog, horse and cow.

Additional Information (Assessment) You are expected to attend ALL of the professional and clinical skills practical/tutorial classes listed on this course, but you MUST attend a minimum of 75% of these

classes to pass this course.

If for medical reasons you cannot attend you must inform the school office and your Personal Tutor in writing of your illness and produce a Medical Certificate.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Identify the personal attributes and behaviours required of a professional ((including the online identity and ability to enter text into online systems for the purposes of assessment, learning and professional activities) and start to develop effective time and stress management, independent learning, study skills and reflective practices.
  2. Develop basic communication skills appropriate for varying audiences, including client interactions and peer group work.
  3. Be able to find, use and critic relevant literature resources and be able to communicate these either in a written format (e.g. essay) or orally (e.g. presentation)
  4. Demonstrate and verbalise the steps involved in performing basic subjective and physical examinations of a dog, horse and cow.
  5. Reflect on personal progress in the development of introductory professional and clinical skills and identify strengths and weaknesses.
