A basic familiarity with computing and IT is important for most careers. This is reflected in business management and accounting, where facility in the computing practices and resources of information security and management of widely used tools is expected. This course gives background knowledge which will prove essential as students undertake further courses and proceed into the workplace. |
Course description |
The course aims to provide essential background knowledge in the use of basic computing tools used for collaboration, presentation and reporting in the business environment that will prove valuable, if not essential, as students undertake further courses and proceed into the workplace. The course will also provide background knowledge in data protection and information security.
The course would cover the following topics:
- Presentation Tools: Use of a presentation package to produce high quality presentations quickly and efficiently.
- Reporting Tools: Use of a word-processing package for the timely and accurate preparation of essays and reports.
- Data Protection/Information Security: Knowledge of good data protection and information security practice that is essential to ensuring the security of user account information and data.
Teaching will take the form of formative self-taught on-line tutorial material supported by a Learn Discussion Board for each topic and additional voluntary 'walk-in' practical workshop sessions with tutor support. There will be a summative assessed assignment to be completed for each topic.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Understand the key concepts relating to the use of Microsoft Teams for meetings and on-line tutorials.
- Understand the key concepts relating to the importance of secure information and data, physical security, privacy and identity theft.
- Create a simple presentation using a variety of slide types, print slides and speaker and audience notes.
- Apply essential techniques of word processing that are consistent with those stated in the University Degree Regulations and Programmes of Study as required for the production of essays and other assessed work.
