| Summary | Globally, poor reproductive and maternal health outcomes are a major cause of mortality and morbidity. The purpose of this module is to promote an appreciation of the causes and underlying determinants of poor reproductive and maternal health, including the impact of infectious diseases; and to appraise approaches aimed at addressing the problems. |
| Course description |
This SCQF Level 11 distance-learning course is designed to promote a critical understanding of issues in reproductive and maternal health.
Course materials will cover:
- Causes, determinants, and consequences of poor reproductive and maternal health.
- Inequalities and disparities in reproductive and maternal health.
- Essential interventions and healthcare packages.
- Approaches to monitoring, measuring, and reporting.
- Local, national, and global strategies and goals.
- Exploration and critical analysis of current thinking, themes and research.
There will be a theme throughout on the impact of infectious diseases related to reproductive and maternal health.
The course will be delivered using the online Blackboard virtual learning environment with a combination of course materials and discussion boards.

Summative written assessment comprised of critical analysis of successes and challenges in improving reproductive and maternal health (60% weighting).
Assessed online activities including assessed discussion boards related to course content (40% weighting).

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Discuss and critically understand the predominant causes and determinants of poor reproductive and maternal health, the inequalities that exist, and the populations which are most affected.
- Understand the theory and application of methods of measuring and reporting reproductive and maternal health.
- Understand the impact of infectious diseases on reproductive and maternal health.
- Critically evaluate academic literature and conceptual models in the field of reproductive and maternal health.
- Apply theoretical understanding in the development and evaluation of strategies, interventions and health packages aimed at improving reproductive and maternal health at a local, national and global level.
