| Summary | In this course students will cover theoretic and practical aspects of anatomical/medical education with a particular focus on teaching anatomy to undergraduate students. Teaching theory will be explored in a series of two week blocks, focusing on how to design a curriculum, methods used to teach anatomy, theories underlying small and large group teaching, how to design assessment and feedback, as well as alternative methods of teaching anatomy (i.e. using modelling or body painting). Content will be delivered by a compulsory reading list, with knowledge consolidated in 3 hour interactive seminars. Practical experience of teaching will be gained by observing teaching during semester 1, and by mentored participation in ongoing teaching activities within anatomy during semester 2. The course will culminate in a two part portfolio to be submitted at the end of the second semester, which will bring together the teaching theory and practical experience students have gained throughout the course. |

The course will cover the theory and practice of:
Adult learning styles
Preparing a teaching session
Teaching in small group practicals
Teaching in small group tutorials
Preparing better slides
Lecturing skills
Providing supporting educational material
The use of reusable learning objects
Curriculum planning and design
Assessment methodology
Blueprinting of assessments
Workplace-based assessment and giving feedback
The course is based around small group activities with a lot of interactivity, aimed at facilitating learning rather than necessarily leading it. Students would be expected to lead sessions using prepared work based on the provided learning resources.
On completion of this course students will have demonstrated: (1) extensive, detailed and critical knowledge and understanding of the theoretical and practical skills required to effectively teach anatomy; (2) knowledge of critical review, consolidation of knowledge and analyse relevant scientific papers of teaching anatomy; (3) the ability to generate materials required to deliver effective teaching, learning resources and assessments.
