SummaryThis course explores the development of science communication from a broadly social perspective. The course considers the social, cultural and political context in which the science communication agenda has emerged over the past 20 years, and how this in turn, has informed the governance of science and technology. A key theme pursued throughout the course is that of knowledge and expertise in the context of societal issues in which science is a factor.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. A critical understanding of the deficit model in science communication.
  2. A critical understanding of policy debates about science communication and public engagement.
  3. An ability to Identify, conceptualise and offer original and creative insights into debates and discussion around the developing science communication and public engagement context.
  4. A critical understanding of the social and political aspects of lay-expert relations and how social science analysis can further our understanding of these issues.
