| Summary | This course introduces more advanced Japanese Studies topics to third year students on their year abroad in Japan. Students will work with selected readings and primary materials related to content courses in year four to produce two pieces of honours level written work.

| Course description |
The year abroad is wonderful for your Japanese, but due to the focus on language your essay writing skills tend to suffer. Furthermore, when you return to Edinburgh we require you to take a range of Japanese Studies content courses that demand a high level of engagement with advanced readings and primary sources. This course is designed to prepare you for advanced study of Japan.
Each semester you will complete an essay pack related to one of the content courses in fourth year. The pack will contain a question, readings, and the primary sources needed to answer the question fully. On completion of the course you will have a clear understanding of the standards expected of you in fourth year, and will have received the feedback necessary to reach those standards. You will have also exercised those much-needed English writing skills, and will be able to hit the ground running on your return to Edinburgh.

- Critically assess the literature on a given topic in Japanese Studies.
- Conduct independent research with periodic guidance from Japanese Studies staff.
