| Summary | A course for beginners with no previous knowledge of Japanese, designed to introduce the Japanese language and culture. The course is not suitable for students with previous knowledge of Japanese language.
All students take all elements of assessment including the examination. Auditing (Class Only) is not allowed.
This course runs both in semester 1 and semester 2.
On successful completion of the course students will have the option of taking Foundation Japanese Language 2 in Semester 2 (20 credits), which follows on from Foundation Japanese Language 1. |
| Course description |
The following list is a description of the contents of the course. Along with each topic and function, relevant vocabulary, grammatical and textual structures, and culture notes will be introduced.
-How to read and type Japanese scripts: hiragana and katakana
-Introducing yourself and others
-Nationalities and occupations
-Talking about a nearby object and its owner
-Dates, times and numbers
-Prices, characteristics of items and shopping
-Talking about where you will go, when, how, and with whom
-Talking about numbers of things or people that exist in a particular place

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- exchange greetings, give his or her identity, name a number of familiar objects, shop and ask about an item, and talk about a trip very briefly if given adequate time and familiar cues.
- read a very short text in Japanese if it is written without any kanji (Chinese characters) such as simple letters or postcards on a limited range of topics with event times and trips, and write the same type of text electronically.
- recognise some aspects of Japanese culture, such as landmarks in major cities, Japanese food, and Japanese manners in business situations.
- be familiar with the use of online language learning resources and the virtual learning environment (VLE) to enhance their self-study and continue with Japanese language learning and master the basic writing skills of Japanese text on computer / mobile devices.
- develop confidence in language learning and to work both independently and in groups as a successful language learner.
