SummaryUsing the much-debated concepts of the auteur and authorship in cinema as its springboard, Cinema Auteurs 2 will focus on the work of a number of important directors who have developed distinct film styles. The course will not be limited to European film, allowing for the comparative analysis of the work of European and non-European filmmakers. Key topics to be discussed in the course of the programme include: the usefulness or obsolescence of the concept of individual authorship in cinema considered in the context of changing cultural, socio-historical and filmmaking practices; cinema as both a highly collaborative art and activity and a means of individual artistic expression; the role of gender, sexuality and politics in considering issues of authorship; and the differences between mainstream and art house film directors.
Course description The course is delivered through one two hour seminar and one film screening per week.
