SummaryThis course will explore contemporary issues in sport management emanating from the dynamic and highly competitive environment within which sports organisations operate. The course will focus on three main sectors covering public, private and voluntary sector organisations and how such organisations have responded to the challenges at local, national, regional or international level.
Course description The field of sport management has focused on exploring theories that are originally derived from mainstream management and applying such theories within a sports context. Another way of studying sport management has focused on the re-application of theory grounded or initially generated from a sport context. The course will draw upon theory from both a sports context and also implications of management theory upon sports organisations. Since sports organisations operate in a mixed economy, contemporary issues covering these spheres will be examined and their likely impact on managing sports organisations. Sports organisations do not operate in a vacuum but are influenced by the activities of other non-sport related management practices. Students will be required to identify or acknowledge contemporary issues in society and their implications upon the management of sport. Students will draw upon case studies at local, national and international level to study such phenomena.
The students will explore current environment with which sports organisations undertake their operations and examine the drivers of change that are likely to also influence management practice in each sector. A case study approach will be ideal for studying different management practices and application of theory to the different situations. Students will explore how current or emerging political, economic, social, technological, legal or environment developments are likely influence practices in the operation and management of the performance of sports organisations.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Critically examine current issues in managing sport at local, national, regional and international level.
  2. Critically analyse the political, economic, social-cultural and technological developments as drivers of change in the management of sport organisations.
  3. Demonstrate critical analysis of contemporary issues in the study of sport management and performance of sports organisations.
  4. Demonstrate application of appropriate management theories to the analysis of sport organisations within the public, private and voluntary sectors.
  5. Critically analyse the changing nature of professions within the sport industry.
