1. Course description:
1a. Academic description
You must take this course if you have to study abroad in third year as apart of the curriculum for a joint degree with social policy. For example, if you are taking a degree in a modern language with social policy, then you will take this course. The general aim is to encourage you to think about social policy in the country where you are living.
1b. Outline content
The content is negotiated with the course convener, who is the head of Social Policy. The normal approach is to choose one substantial topic in social policy in each semester, and to follow a course of guided reading on that topic associated with the ways in which the topic arises in connection with the country where you are based for your year abroad. For example, you might read about health, education, the labour market, migration, or crime in that country. The course convener will either advise on the reading, or arrange for another member of staff with appropriate expertise to advise on the reading. The topics must differ between the two semesters.
1c. Student Learning
You will be responsible for your own work, since you will be doing it abroad and therefore not under the direct supervision of the course convener. So it will be your responsibility to contact the convener periodically for advice about reading, to report on your emerging ideas from the reading, and to request further suggested reading. It will also be your responsibility to explore possible ideas for reading yourself.
