| Summary | This course forms part of the Post-Graduate Pre-Sessional English Programme for Semester 1, and is taken in conjunction with 'Academic Reading and Writing' and 'Academic Listening and Speaking'.
It offers you a unique opportunity to reflect, independently and with others, on your language learning and development on the other two courses. You will also develop the study skills you will need to transition successfully to your chosen postgraduate degree programme. |
| Course description |
On this course, you will be introduced to, use and reflect on a number of study skills for language learning as well as transferable study skills for University such as critical thinking, time management, and reading skills. You will work independently and in collaboration with others.
The course operates in line with the Pre-sessional principles which emphasise the importance of developing your autonomy and criticality, the ability to reflect on your own learning, and learning to work as part of an academic community.
The course will contribute to your successful transition to your chosen postgraduate degree programme.
Weekly sessions will focus on study skills and reflection on language learning.
Study skills sessions include core language learning strategies for vocabulary and grammar, including extensive reading and listening, as well as student choice from university study skills topics, which may include: effective studying; critical thinking; time management; dissertation and research projects; exams and revision.
Reflections on language learning will involve small group discussions on learning across courses, followed by individual reflections utilising a variety of tasks and genres.
You will attend interactive classes involving active discussion and collaborative tasks. On some days you will have small-group or individual tutorials to reflect on and discuss your learning with your teacher.
You will receive formative feedback on your reflections at regular intervals.
In order to make progress, you will need to engage fully and actively in all the learning activities, including completing homework tasks, reflecting on and responding to feedback, and doing additional independent study, seeking advice from your teacher when necessary.
