| Summary | This course introduces students to the theoretical study of phonology with a focus on English. The course is intended for students who have no previous experience of studying phonology or phonetics. Most data will come from a reference dialect of English, e.g. Standard Southern British English, but data may also come from other varieties or from other languages. Concepts relating to phonological description and analysis will be studied in the context of current linguistic theory. |

- carry out IPA transcriptions of aspects of the phonology of English
- analyse key phonological patterns in English and other languages
- describe the production of English speech sounds
- describe and analyse aspects of English syllable structure
