| Course description |
Through a series of seminars, over 11 weeks, this course will examine key works of art, buildings, cultural artefacts and practices which are available to study in Edinburgh. From year to year, depending on the specialism of the Course Organiser, and the art that is on view in the city at the time, the course may cover different chronological periods, from Medieval Scotland and the wider Celtic world, through the city's rich collections in Renaissance and Early Modern paintings and sculptures, to the modern and contemporary art in the city's permanent collections and its internationally renowned Festival and temporary exhibitions. Museums, collections and galleries which may be utilised include but are not restricted to the National Galleries of Scotland (including the National Portrait Gallery and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art), the National Museum of Scotland, the National Library, the Fruitmarket Gallery, Talbot Rice Gallery, LUX Scotland, and the University of Edinburgh Special Collections.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Analyse and interpret key artworks, monuments, and/or objects of material culture in Edinburgh;
- Evaluate art historical issues using research skills such as visual, material and textual analysis.
- Undertake independent research using a range of primary materials, art and artefacts.
- Assemble a range of primary and secondary information sources to support art historical communication.
