| Summary | This course will equip students to apply their musical knowledge and skills usefully in the community in a variety of situations, for example in education, special needs and music therapy. |
| Course description |
Creative Group Project (second semester): all Music in the Community students will be required to take part in a performance project over 3 months. This involves collaboration with a professional arts team in a local primary school working with 200 children and will engage all aspects of creative music making and performance culminating in two evening events in March 2020.

| Additional Information (Assessment) |
There are three components:
Assessment of Placement (50%) to be carried out during Semester 2.
One c. 5,000 word essay (35%). Each student will undertake a placement across the social or educational between October and March.
Students will be required to keep a reflective diary which should include; Workshop plans, weekly reporting on progress and issues arising, which will form the basis of their Essay submission. The essay should evaluate, reflect and analyse the placement with an emphasis on methodological insights.
Group project (15%). Assessment of contribution to project work by professional project leaders with date to be notified by Course Organiser.

| Feedback |
Throughout the academic year students will receive oral and formative feedback in 1-2-1 or small group sessions. These will take place before or after the weekly placement. Post-assessment visit the students will receive written feedback on placement feedback sheet. In Semester 1 this will indicate progress and areas for development.
Students will also receive regular advice and feedback by email if they should wish, in respect to their plans for placement sessions.
During practical workshops students will receive formative feedback from the course organiser, visiting specialists and their peers.
They will receive written feedback on the assessed essay including comments on the accompanying feedback sheet.
Placement: Students will receive group assessment by CO and Tutors in semester 1 - plus 1 to 1 formative feedback session - CO.
Written feedback will be provided for each component of summative assessment within 15 working days.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Students will have gained experience in using creative and improvisational skills with individuals and groups
- They will have developed their own practical musicianship in a community context
- They will have had experience of communicating through music in a variety of community situations
- They will have worked together with professional musicians and clients in placements
- They will have analysed and evaluated their own placement work and reflected on its outcomes
