Summary | You will work on your own on an extended project under the direction of one or more members of staff. You will give a very brief presentation that outlines your topic at the Residential Symposium, a progress report presentation after a few weeks and the final submission of the written report (a properly structured document) and the final oral presentation is at the end of July. You will create a poster summarising your extended project work which will be displayed at the annual MAC-MIGS Colloquium. |
Course description |
Mainly in the first two semesters, opportunities to attend generic skills training will be made available to you and you are encouraged to make the most of this. It may also be possible to arrange specific training to meet a demand if several students are interested in a specific area.
Semester 1
The SMSTC Symposium in Perth includes workshops on tutoring, marking and how to get a PhD.
Computer Tools & Skills I & II micro project report, and write summary of talk in MAC-MIGS Colloquium.
Presentation skills
Semester 2
Maths Modelling Camp.
Short presentation at MAC-MIGS Residential Symposium.
All Year
Gain experience of writing LaTeX in SMSTC assignments. Store in Training Log.
We expect students to attend general mathematical activities such as seminars, discussions, colloquia and EMS meetings where possible, provided they do not clash with taught courses and other 1st Year MAC-MIGS programme activities.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Work independently researching a mathematical topic, searching independently for information in appropriate sources.
- Investigate a topic in the general area of analysis and its applications in sufficient depth to show appreciation of the most up to date research.
- Understand what plagiarism is and how to reference material properly.
- Give an oral progress report.
- Write a properly structured report that: explains the research in the project; indicates the importance of the research topic; shows an appreciation of its broader context and significance in the mathematical sciences.
