| Summary | A compulsory course for MEL Single Honours in Italian and MEL+OSNAL (Other Subject Not A Language) students, which carries 10 credits and aims at improving students' grasp of a variety of Italian idioms, registers and styles, as well as enhancing the ability to convey them appropriately into English.
Class activities will include summary translation, polished translation, and comparative analysis of published translations. Selected Italian texts will be analysed and discussed in groups and collectively during the class hour.
(Note: course weighting has changed to 50% Coursework/ 50% Final Exam from session 2018-19 onwards) |

Individual written feedback will also be provided in detail on their coursework assignments. Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- engage successfully with complex Italian texts demonstrating an advanced knowledge of linguistic structures, vocabulary and cultural references.
- enhance sensitivity to different styles, registers and idioms in English and Italian.
- develop awareness of the typical problems encountered in translation, and consolidate translation skills (equivalence, adaptation, compensation)
- convey Italian texts faithfully into fluent, precise/creative English prose.
- improve problem solving and decision-making skills as well as the ability to work effectively in a team or independently under the tutor's guidance
