Spanish 1B is a language, literature and culture course for students with university entry qualifications in Spanish. One half of the course is dedicated to language studies and the other to the literature and culture of Spain and Spanish America. Language work is set at the equivalent of level B1- B2 on the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR). Classes develop written, oral and listening comprehension skills while the cultural elements of the course introduce students to a selection of works from the Spanish-speaking world and develop research, analytical and writing skills. |
| Course description |
Weekly written language classes are designed around the textbook and will develop your understanding and command of grammatical constructions and your ability to write and comprehend a variety of texts in Spanish. Oral classes, also weekly, develop spoken and listening comprehension skills. They are structured around topics in the textbook and also the films shown during our fortnightly film screenings.
The cultural half of Spanish 1B invites you to explore how diverse cultural forms have engaged with foundational moments in Spain and Spanish America. A one-hour weekly lecture will be followed by a one-hour seminar under the guidance of a tutor. Seminar actvities will include group discussion, debate and close reading.
Independent class preparation and study are vital for all aspects of learning on the Spanish1B course.

Other requirements | Spanish at Grade B in Higher, A-level or equivalent.
EITHER 70% in Foundation Spanish 2 OR 50% in Foundation Spanish 3 at the first attempt;
OR equivalent.
If your entry qualification for Spanish is a Scottish Higher, you will automatically be admitted to 1B. Students with a 'crash' Higher OR a Higher awarded more than 1 year ago will be registered on Spanish 1B, but may take a Proficiency Test to gauge their ability.
Depending on the results, course registration would be changed to Spanish 1A.
Other students whose qualifications in Spanish are more than 3 years old may also take the Proficiency Test to determine whether Spanish 1A or 1B would be more appropriate.
The test will be available online on Learn and students are required to complete it by Friday 13th September.
Please note that changing from 1B to 1A is not allowed in any other circumstances.

| Feedback |
In addition to the assessed language exercises and essays, students will receive feedback on formative assignments. For Spanish 1B, e-Learning exercises (available on Learn) provide instant feedback. Similarly, during the oral classes in Semester 1, you will be asked to give a presentation on one of the films and will then receive feedback from your tutor as well as an approximate mark. For the cultural component, verbal feedback will be provided in seminars on formative exercises such as the close analysis of texts and exam technique practice.
For work on literature and film, students will be given written feedback on their annotated bibliography, poster, commentary and essay. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate accurate use of a wide range of forms in Spanish vocabulary, grammar and syntax.
- Understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics.
- Produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects.
- Demonstrate a cultural knowledge of some of the countries of the Spanish-speaking world in written and spoken formats.
- Undertake cultural analysis with reference to historical periods.
