Summary | This course focuses on geophysical methods for investigating the subsurface of the earth for resources: minerals, water, and hydrocarbons. The physical properties of the resources that contrast with the background determine the geophysical method that should be used to detect and evaluate them. |
Course description |
The emphasis of the course is on high resolution extraction of physical properties from geophysical data.
Syllabus:
Introduction to geophysical exploration for resources
Anisotropy in the earth
Determination of seismic velocities
Land and marine seismic sources
Seismic reflection interpretation and well-ties
Geophysical time lapse methods
Removal of multiples in seismic data processing
Seismic interferometry
Micoseismics
Controlled source electromagnetics (CSEM)
Airborne magnetic exploration
The course includes a practical course on seismic data processing using SEG-Y seismic data and seismic-industry software.
5 practicals (3 hours each) and 5 tutorials (3 hours each) are held on alternate weeks.
Students complete the practical work in their own time and are required to write a report on the data processing of not more than 4,000 words.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate familiarity with the application of geophysical methods to find scarce earth resrouces
- Appreciate the concepts and methods of seismic data processing
- Appreciate the requirement that the derived earth model must be consistent with all the data
- Appreciate the role of reflection seismology in determination of subsurface structure, controlled source electromagnetics in the determination of subsurface fluids and gravity and magnetics in the location of ore bodies
- Familiarity with current research topics in industrial geophysics
