Course description |
The course is composed of five x 2.5 hour lectures: 1) Approaches to Human Cognition, 2) Perception and Attention, 3) Memory, 4) Thinking and Reasoning, 5) Cognition and Emotion. Throughout the course, links between mental health and cognitive processes will be considered.
The lectures will be complemented by recommended readings made available through LEARN. Students will also be encouraged to contribute to student-led discussions to supplement the lectures on the materials provided within the course. Encouragement of peer discussion within the course will engage students in deeper critical reflection on the theories presented in the lectures and associated materials.
The course is a core component of the MSc Psychology of Mental Health (Conversion) but will be open to others at the discretion of the course organiser.

Additional Information (Assessment) |
There will be two assessments for this course.
A formative assessment will take place in the third week. It will take the form of a short multiple-choice quiz and three short-answer questions to be completed at home. Responses should be submitted to a discussion forum. Peer and staff feedback will be provided. The formative assessment will only assess topics already covered by that point in the course (i.e. the first three weeks of lectures).
The summative assessment will be a 2-hour exam worth 100% of marks, consisting of two sections. Section A will comprise three short answer questions (from a choice of 10 questions) and Section B will comprise an extended essay question (from a choice of 5 questions).
