| Summary | Using the much debated concepts of auteur and authorship in cinema as its springboard, Cinema Auteurs 2 will focus on the work of a number of film directors who have developed distinctive film styles. The course will not be limited to European film, allowing for the comparative analysis of the work of European and non-European filmmakers, looking at various connections and comparing frameworks of references in international cinema. We will concentrate on the relationship of motifs to themes in a director's work. Key topics to be discussed in the course of the programme include: the issue of the usefulness or obsolescence of the concept of authorship in cinema considered in the context of changing cultural, socio-historical and filmmaking practices, gender, philosophy and politics in cinema, film aesthetics. |
