| Summary | This course introduces the MA Architecture degree's practice period in terms of the ethical, procedural, and business aspects around the profession of architecture. It also provides a framework that supports students in their practice period and facilitate an active reflection on their practice activities.
It comprises of a series of seminars and presentations to prepare for practice activity followed by distance learning delivered to support workplace activities. You will undertake coursework that reinforces and contexualises your work based learning. |
| Course description |
This course has two components. Induction orients students to the aims and objectives of the MA Architecture degree practice period. It provides guidance and support to help students identify and secure employment opportunities. Following this, Reflection combines workplace learning with a series of coursework assignments. It asks students to consider and reflect on their own experience simultaneously with academic study in aspects of professional practice.
The course content includes learning and teaching around the principles of professional practice. This encompasses the ethical underpinnings of professional practice, business structure, building procurement and pathways to professional registration.
You will be taught through a series of seminars and presentations on campus. During the practice period, the course is delivered by distance learning with tutorial support from dedicated practice support tutors.
The course forms part of the curriculum for the MA Hons Degree in Architecture as prescribed by the Architects Registration Board. All the Learning Outcomes for the course address the ARB criteria, GC4, 6, 10 and 11. Learning Outcomes 1 and 3 addresses the ARB criteria, GC10.

1. You are asked to write four short texts each of 500 words in length on a series of topics relating to working in practice. This comprises 40% of the total mark for this course.
2. You are asked to prepare an illustrated design report (800 words in length) for a case study project that focuses on pertinent issues such as building procurement and statutory frameworks. This comprises 20% of the total mark for this course.
3. You are asked to write an essay of 2000 words chosen from a series of topics that engages with architecture as a profession in wider social and economic contexts. This comprises 40% of the total mark for this course.
Assessment component 1 addresses learning outcome 1, 2 + 3.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Understand business management and knowledge of the legal and statutory frameworks within which Architectural Design is practiced and delivered.
- Understand the role of the client, Architect and related professions in the costing, procurement and realisation of architectural design projects.
- Understand the role of the Architect in society, including knowledge of professionalism and emerging trends in the construction industry.
