SummaryThis course supplements the work students will be doing in the core course Social Anthropology 2: Key Concepts. It will mainly focus on writing and presentation skills, with a view to helping students develop their work for key concepts, and providing transferable skills for the future. We will focus on developing ethnographic and conceptual arguments, as well as on fundamental writing and presentation skills. This will help students to develop their own critical arguments and to better understand and parse the theoretical and ethnographic arguments of others.

Choose an object or image that is used in differet ways by different cultures or groups. Working with your assigned group and using your choice of image, video, audio, oral, or written presentation, give an ethnographic account of that object or image, and show how it helps to illustrate concepts of social structure or cultural difference.

Awards are made on a Pass/Fail basis. You MUST pass the course to proceed to the next year of study.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Students will have a clear understanding of the relationship between ethnography and theory in anthropology and the ways in which anthropologists structure this relationship in their texts.
  2. Students will be able to research and develop definitions for key anthropological terms
  3. Students will be able to develop positive as well as negative critiques of anthropological texts
  4. Students will have a clear grasp of the wide variety of methods, including quantitative methods and photography, which anthropologists use to support ethnographic arguments.
