Principles of surveillance
Using routine data for research
Surveillance of infectious diseases including monitoring and evaluation (Polio, measles, and influenza as student-led case studies)
Risk factor surveillance for non-communicable diseases
Principles of epidemic field investigation
Principles of screening & Screening for non-communicable diseases (cancer- breast, colon and cervix as student-led case studies)
Screening for infectious diseases (HIV / TB as examples)
Needs assessment for public health programme
Evaluation of health programmes
Health impact assessment and healthy public policy
Q & A session regarding assignment

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Critically understand principles and practice of screening, surveillance, outbreak response, use of routine data and health impact assessment
  2. Apply these principles to different contexts using appropriate tools and skills
  3. Deal with complex public health issues and make informed judgments in situations in the absence of complete or consistent data
  4. Communicate public health information to a range of audiences with different levels of knowledge/expertise
