SummaryAn interdisciplinary introduction to current ideas and theoretical issues concerning politics, religion, culture, history, economy, and community that are relevant to students studying all aspects of modern South Asia. Relevant practical research methodology questions will also be addressed.

The course is aimed at M.Res students working on South Asia. It involves attendance (and participation) throughout the year at the interdisciplinary South Asian Studies Research Seminar, held on Thursdays from 4-6pm. This is then accompanied by one-to-one supervision and guided reading that relates methodological issues and debates arising within the research seminar to the particular interests of students.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Use techniques of close reading and textual analysis
  2. Utilise presentational abilities
  3. Utilise collaborative skills in the group discussion of technical issues in social, cultural and historical theory
  4. Utilise a familiarity with contemporary theoretical and methods employed in the interdisciplinary study of South Asia
  5. Compare and assess the knowledge-claims and methods of competing disciplinary perspectives on South Asia
