Summary | An introduction to the Latin language for complete beginners and those with limited recent experience of the language. A thorough grounding is provided in the essentials of Latin accidence (nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs) and in the syntax of the simple sentence. |
Course description |
This course aims to teach complete beginners the basics of Latin grammar to enable them to read straightforward Latin by the end of the semester. The course, therefore, moves at a very fast pace. The class meets for 4 hours each week, and in addition there are 6 tutorials during the semester.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- demonstrate, by way of coursework and examination as required, that they have mastered basic Latin morphology;
- demonstrate, by way of coursework and examination as required, that they can recognise and understand basic Latin syntactical constructions;
- demonstrate, by way of coursework and examination as required, that they can translate short extracts from Latin into English;
- demonstrate in class discussion an ability to analyse and reflect critically upon the Latin language and upon scholarly and conceptual discussions about approaches to the language.
