Summary | This research elective will introduce students to the nature, purpose and function of the archive as a "knowledge space" - a site for the safe keeping, curation and production of scholarly and other materials. Using a number of archives within the resources of the University and within institutions in the city of Edinburgh, attention will be paid to the ways in which the archive as a space and archiving as a process determine the nature of knowledge. Rather than focus alone on the content of relevant geographical and other archived material, students will be expected to interrogate and to understand the archives' own conditions of existence, including provenance, cataloguing and accessibility. The course has the firm support of archive and library staff within the Special Collections division of the University Library. (NB: 'Archive' is used here to include printed works and non-textual sources). |

The course is also taught as a Year 4 (Senior Honours) Research Elective as part of the MA/BSc Geography Degree Programmes. Whilst most classes and archive visits will be in common, MSc students will have additional tutorials and will be required to present a short summary of their project and its connection to archives to their fellow students. Notably, the assessment details and requirements are different for the Year 4 Research Elective and the MSc students. |
