Summary | The course aims to provide a basic introduction to software object oriented engineering principles using Java. The course introduces a basic set of programming fundamentals such as input/output techniques, selection statements, iterative loops, recursion and basic data structures. It teaches formal class design techniques to address programming tasks and emphasises error elimination and testing strategies in code development. Practical work is central to learning on the course both in supervised sessions and during the participants own time. |
Course description |
Week by week breakdown of the course:
1: Introduction to programming: object oriented design concepts and Python. Use of integrated development environments. Data types and first programs.
2: Code partitioning. Functions. Object-Oriented programming fundamentals. Designing and coding a simple user-defined class.
3: More complex class design. Evolving new methods. Method overloading. Class design methodology, unit testing and code documentation.
4: Encapsulation and better program control. Spatial object class hierarchies and re-use.
5: Class inheritance and algorithm development. Developing reliable and reusable code to solve problems. Interfacing with the computer and trapping errors.
