SummaryThe goal of this course is to expand on students' general understanding of the immune system and to focus this understanding towards the application of vaccination and immune therapies for the 21st century.
Course description Vaccination is perhaps the most successful medical technological intervention. The goal of this course is to expand on students' general understanding of the immune system and to focus this understanding towards the application of vaccination and immune therapies for the 21st century. Furthermore, the course will give the student a sense of how these principles are applied to vaccine and immune therapeutic development. The course covers basic science as well as the clinical, regulatory, ethical and political issues and implications of modern vaccines and world health. Immunotherapies for immune deficiencies, cancer and autoimmunity will be discussed in the context of the immune system and their real world use.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Show that they have developed a broad knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles of vaccines, vaccination and molecular therapies.
  2. Demonstrate insight into current vaccination practices, gain a detailed understanding of vaccine development and manufacture and recognise the underlying principles associated with the transition of processes from the laboratory through manufacture to end use.
  3. Demonstrate an enhanced ability to consult scientific literature.
  4. Explore their knowledge while being exposed to cutting edge cancer therapies.
  5. Recognise and analyse the problems associated with the development and use of molecular therapies leading to a commercial process.

Graduate Attributes and Skills Students will have a thorough understanding of the immune system, disease diagnosis and the role(s) of vaccines and molecular therapies. They will be aware of issues involved in the exploitation of vaccines and molecular therapy, and be able to demonstrate an understanding of pertinent ethical issues.
