SummaryThe course covers principles of computational biology together with the range and impact of bioinformatics tools used in biological sciences. The syllabus includes: biological databases; pairwise sequence alignment; multiple sequence alignment; next-generation sequencing; and automation of bioinformatics analyses. Previous experience of programming is not required. Lectures are supplemented by on-line exercises and tutorials and in-course assignments.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. At the end of this course the student will have a solid grounding in the basic principles of computational biology
  2. At the end of this course the student will have an appreciation of the range and impact of Bioinformatics tools currently used in the biological sciences.
  3. At the end of this course the student will have produced written reports identifying and applying appropriate tools to investigate questions in genetics.
