SummaryThis is an introductory statistics course for quantitative geneticists.
The syllabus covers probability and distribution theory, hypothesis testing,
regression, correlation, analysis of variance and variance components.
Teaching is through a combination of lectures, tutorials and computer-based
practicals, using the R statistical package. Instruction in the selection of
appropriate statistical methodologies for the analysis of genetic data
(whether from animal, plant or human populations) will be given.
Students will be required to complete 3 in-class assignments and an open book exam.
Students are also expected to attend relevant graduate-level seminars and
quantitative genetics journal clubs.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Students who successfully complete the course will have a solid grounding in statistical methodologies required for quantitative biology.
  2. Students who successfully complete the course will have the requisite knowledge and experience to identify appropriate statistical approaches for analysing different types of genetic data.
  3. Students who successfully complete the course will be able to apply statistical methodologies correctly and interpret results carefully.
  4. Students who successfully complete the course will be experienced in the use of the statistical package 'R'.
  5. Students who successfully complete the course will have conducted and written up a data analysis project.
