Summary | This course will introduce students to a range of methodologies used in musical research, particularly those used in archival research. A variety of resources will be used which will likely include the University's Centre for Research Collections, the National Library of Scotland and the National Archive of Scotland.
Attendance at the series of research seminars organised by Music is a mandatory part of this course.

Course description |
6 classes and 2-3 field trips will run alongside (and support) 5 tasks. Students will present their task research in class to their peers and the class convenor.

2 x 3,000 word essays (50% and 50%).
In each case students elect which of two research tasks presented on in class, to revise and submit formally.

Feedback is given in class on the informal presentations of the research tasks. During the course students elect which two of four research tasks to revise and formally submit. Written feedback is given on each of the formal submissions. |

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of a variety of research metholodogies appropriate to the study of music.
- Demonstrate the ability to select appropriate research methodologies for a range of research tasks.
- Demonstrate the ability to reflect critically on the research methodologies introduced.
- Demonstrate the ability to reflect critically on your own use of particular research methodologies in the tasks undertaken as part of the course.
