Summary	This is a for-credit course offered by the Centre for Open Learning (COL); only students registered with COL should be enrolled. Some of the finest twentieth-century literature stems from the 1930s. Economic turbulence, the rise of Fascism, the international Communist movement, the Spanish Civil War - all of these provide a great backdrop for some intensely humane responses to the troubles of the age ranging from the political to the spiritual, and from the sardonic to the just plain hilarious. Texts to be studied include Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms, Waugh's Scoop, Brecht's Mother Courage, short stories by Orwell, and poetry by Auden, Yeats and Eliot.

Additional Information (Assessment)	Open Studies 10 credit courses have one assessment. Normally, the assessment is a 2000 word essay, worth 100% of the total mark, submitted by week 12.
