Summary | The function of this course on the origins and development of Cubist painting will be to give students the opportunity to explore and discuss both the aesthetics of Cubist imagery and a range of political and philosophical concepts in circulation during the period which informed and influenced the shift away from conventional modes of figurative representation. As such, the course will examine certain aesthetic and social innovations arising in the 19th century which contributed to the emergence of Cubism in the first decade of the 20th century. Towards the end of the semester, after concentrating on the particularities of Cubist painting and its influence on various other european art movements, students will also be asked to consider to what extent the development of pure abstract painting was indebted to the aesthetic and conceptual breakthroughs initiated by Cubist pioneers such as Picasso and Braque. |
